Selling on ebay

Selling on ebay has long been an alternative or addition to your own online shop
and provides a quick, relatively low cost and easy route
to market for your products.

Selling on ebay for products based businesses can actually save on many of the traditional costs associated with the marketing of your products e.g. advertising. This is because the nature of the auction web site means that buyers and sellers are brought together online, drawn by the power of the widely known ebay brand.

ebay is the most popular auction web site. The variety of goods sold - mainly between smaller businesses and individuals - is huge. Versions of the site are available in many countries worldwide, giving users a giant marketplace in which to sell their goods.

To sell on the site you need to open a sellers account with your contact details and bank details. From there you need to categorise your products; the best way to do this is to research it using the search facility. By doing this and by looking through similar items that have sold in past you can get a good idea of how to best write the listing for your products.

Having some high quality photographs of the products to upload is really important, as in most cases, people like to see what they are buying.

When it comes to prices and payment you have a choice. Going with the traditional auction model means setting a price low enough to attract competitive bids, and setting a time limit for the product to remain for sale. Often bidding is most active at the end of the time limit. Should you not wish to go with the traditional auction model, it is possible to set a fixed price to buy now. You can offer buyers any of a number of payment options, including Pay pal.

ebay is essentially a 'middle man', like an auction house which advertises the products, conducts the sale, and takes a fee. Your product listing should accurately give all the information needed to make this happen smoothly, however, once the sale is complete, you will often need to make contact with the buyer to arrange the specified delivery (for which you should have already quoted any necessary prices in your listing). It is from this point that the buyer will have the opportunity to judge you, and rate you as a seller. Their opinions will be published on your ebay profile, so it's essential that you conduct yourself accordingly.
