how to sell on ebay

How to sell on ebay is a common question, and many sites tend to feature only strategies,
tips and the benefits of doing so. This page will help get you started by taking you
through the process of setting up an account, and actually selling.

So how do you actually sell on ebay?

Firstly you need to go to the ebay web site and open a sellers account by clicking on the 'sell' link. You will need to have payment details handy i.e. bank account, debit or credit card details at the ready. This is because there is a charge for selling your items, or for using some of the enhancements of your offering available on the site.

Make sure you are allowed to sell your chosen item on ebay (as some products are excluded), and then conduct some research to enable you to write the listing that will sell your item. For example, this can be done by looking similar items that have already been sold there - these will be listed as 'completed items'.

Once you are happy that you've prepared an appealing and realistic piece of copy, you then need to list your items. You carry out this process by completing the fields on a form. Ebay gives you the choice of letting people buy the item now at a fixed price, or as an auction. If you use the auction format, it's usual to set a price that's low enough to get several buyers interested, in the hope that they will increase the price by bidding against eachother. For the auction option, you can decide the duration e.g. a week. You can also upload pictures of the items you are selling. You can also choose from a variety of ways for the buyers to pay you, from most usual methods to Pay pal. It's worth including in your listing all the actual cost that buyers will need to pay e.g. postage costs.

The web site section called 'My ebay' will let you track the buying activity until the sale is made. At that point, you contact the buyer to arrange the payment and delivery of the item (as stated in your listing). Once you've received the buyer's payment, you post the item to them. It is customary on ebay for the buyer to rate you as a seller. This will be displayed for other future potential buyers to read, so it's in your interest to conduct everything as efficiently and honestly as possible.
